Bridal designer Amsale Aberra
Amsale Aberra is a renowned Ethiopian fashion designer and entrepreneur who specializes in bridal gowns with her flagship boutique located on Madison avenue in New York City.
Born in Addis Ababa in 1953, Amsale left Ethiopia for the United States in 1973 at the tender age of 19.
Just over ten years later and as a bride-to-be, Amsale wanted a wedding gown that radiated luxury, sophistication and femininity, without overdone beading, oversized bows and other fussy decorations.
But in the 1980s America, as she was getting prepared to marry her Bermudian film executive fiancé Neil Brown, such wedding dresses were nowhere to be found. So Amsale designed and created her own modern yet classic dress and later started her own business.
Outfitting America’s top Holywood celebrities and designing some of the prettiest bridesmaid dresses, today Amsale is one of the best couture wedding gown designers in the United States, if not the world, and she is at the helm of not just one but three top wedding collections including Kenneth Pool and Christos.
Amsale’s gowns are sold at stores including Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and boutiques throughout North America and Europe.
Please watch below, Amsale’s interview with CNN’s African Voices show, which describes her as a designer who “permanently stitched her name into the billion dollar wedding gown industry in the US.”
Another great success in Amsale’s life is her daughter Rache Brown who is 25 in 2013. Rachel is a singer-songwriter who is very proud to have a mother from Ethiopia and a father from the Islands of Bermuda.
