Athlete Abebe Bikilla won the gold medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics in the marathon event on this day setting a world record of 2:15:16.2 while running barefoot. It was the first ever marathon Gold medal for Africa.




12 SEPTEMBER 1974:

Mengistu Hailemariam led a military coup on this day introducing a socialist government. After 17 years in power, he was ousted in 1991 by the then guerrilla group – the EPRDF – which has been in power ever since.
