– In part 3, using imagex.exe from a WindowsPE boot disk, I capture the generalized system image and save it as a WIM file to an external USB hard drive. The tutorial is done with a VMware Windows 7 virtual machine.
The goal of this tutorial series is to show how to create a Golden Windows 7 System Image that you could then install throughout an entire lab.
This image (WIM) can be a prepared computer system that includes: the operating system, drivers, programs, and files that you would otherwise need to install one by one on all the systems in your network. Using this method, you install one system the way you want it, then you turn it into a golden image or WIM file, and then install the entire lab from that image file or WIM

i have question for first thanks you for video. i need to make when i finish windows installation and see logon screen there is old user and new user how to do when i finish installation i will see only one fresh newest created when windows install
you barely know what you are doing! you could of just list volumes in diskpart. you couldn't even manage to switch between drives properly. this should have been a 3 minute video
thx for great tutorial but will be good if you finish it <3
Just for future reference for those to come..
After you "list disk" you can skip using "CD" command and just type "list volume". It'll save you some time and show you what Drive letters belong to what.
Every video, I swear. Never shows how to deploy the actual image using WDS. Thats the part I'm stuck on trying to get to work. Did he ever upload part 4?
Very good tutorials, cheers
You never show how to create the unattended.xml file and lots of people end up bricking their system because windows gets stuck in an infinite loop during the "windows is starting for the first time" stage specifically when using the /generalize parameter!!! You have to use the windows system image manger apparently to create the file but I have not found a single video explaining how to use it!!!
Without already know how to use the windows system image manager to create that file is about the same as handing someone a bottle scotch, a hand full of gauze, and a scalpel and telling them to go perform brain surgery on someone!
I wanted to say I have been trying to figure this out over the years off and on. Never knew how after several searches. I watches some of your videos in the past and it helped with CCNA. Then I stumbled across your tutorial last night and said I will see if you put all the pieces together so this could be finally figured out. And after all day tweaking this and that. I got it. Wanted to say thank you that this has stumped me for a very long time. Just wish you wouldve done part 4.
yo in diskpart you can also type "list volume" and it will show the letters. Win PE has annoying feature of messing with those disks and letters…
hi,now when you saved my head from exploding, after 6 hours of research and understanding nothing and then finally coming across your life saving video, would you not give us a next video for Deploying this image please??
Is there a video that shows how to deploy this WIM file to a hard drive?
Dan,
With 2016 being here, and all manufacturers like, Lenovo, embedding the windows product key in the bios… is this possible? I spoke with support there but I question her answer… she said as long as the image is captured and being deployed to the same device type (example… a carbon x1), that I dont need to generalize the image, and that the system will automatically detect the key and apply it during deployment phase….. does this sound accurate? Can anyone confirm this for me??
Thanks!!!
Finally someone who explains it clearly
i have issues when im capturing the image it will pop up a error message saying Ibrowser is null. and image doesn't create
.
How long does this usually take? Mine has taken what seems to be well over 2.5 hours? Is that normal?
i have my images stored on the technician computer, but i cannot capture the image as winpe is not able to see the drive of the technician computer.. do i need to place the image on the reference system instead?
Great video! i have doned it and working fine for me, through the lecture i have capture Windows 8 image, bit different commands, but same idea,
Great video! but you could have done "list volume" instead of list disk and it would have told you what drive your stuff was on a lot faster.
Can you explain how to convert the golden .wim to a burnable .iso with the "oscdimg.exe" command?
When I ran the diskpart command, I only see one disk which is my external hard drive. I couldn't find system drive which I want to capture. Please help! Note: I'm capturing my WIndow Server 2008 R2 64bits. Thank you!
In the capture step, if I have made change in Local Policy Setting, will it capture those changes?
Where is part 4?!
thanks for the step by step explanation 🙂 sadly for me it is not capturing my D: drive and says imagex isnt a command it can work with :/ so i will just have to ask more info in school tomorrow , this vid taught me some new stuff about the cmd prompt tho, so thanks for that 🙂 like & fav
thanks Dan, your videos were better than the microsoft training which is not very straight forward, i finally understand now
Hello Dan,
How do you deploy the WIM file once you have it on your thumb drive/pin drive/USB drive etc? Please let us know.
Thank you
great video Dan, now is there a part 4 to it where you deploy your image? Thanks!
Suggestion:
DiskPart
then in the new shell type:
list volume
you will see volume name and letter assigned to each volume.
Good stuff, Question? What if i have the .wim(golden image) and what to add it to vmware to make changes/updates..many more.create a new system. How can I do that? instead of starting from scratch? let me know if you have an answer..thanks or if anybody has one..
Your a life saver! Thank you so much!
Very very helpful!
Thank you so much 🙂
