Partitioning and Dual Boot computing is a powerful tool. The beginner should learn and understand the use of partitioning a hard disk drive. Partitioning a Hard drive means that you will virtually split your hard disk into separate storage areas. You can easily divide your hard drive into separate partitions. In fact, your hard drive was built to handle this configuration and requires no effort from you to use it.
Microsoft Windows Disk Management is where you will find a Graphical User Interface where you can modify your partition. In dual boot, you need to prepare your hard disk with a partition that is unallocated. Once you have an open space, you can then format that space to anything you want.
Fat32 is a popular format used for universal access from multiple operating systems. Windows uses NTFS. Linux uses ext4. When installing Linux I recommend creating an unallocated space. Let the Operating system format the drive during the instillation.

If you are installing Ubuntu, I advise against allowing it to do the partitioning for you because it doens't do it correctly. Look the info up and do it manually. 3X in a row, it has made my grub or boot file 1MB and given it no file sytem; it should be at least 100MB and the fat32 files system. it also doens't give the main partition any file system, but should be ext4 file system. Supposedly, this has been happening to many people (not all?) since Ubuntu 12 – all the way through Ubuntu 19. and it won't boot. i looked it up and this is extremely common.

Great tutorial! Question: Do you know how to install linux without a dvd/cd?
Cool, except Microsoft decided to remove the handy 'start button' and even handier 'search programs' in Windows 8. And Windows 8 is why we just made the switch to Linux and want one computer to still dual boot the crap Win 8 when needed – for a while.
