KB Article:
This video demonstrates how to recreate a missing virtual machine disk descriptor .vmdk file.
Note: VMware recommends to attempt to restore the missing descriptor file from backups if possible. If this is not possible, proceed with recreating the VMDK file.
To create a virtual machine disk descriptor file (VMDK):
– Identify the size of the flat file in bytes.
– Create a new blank virtual disk that is the same size as the original. This serves as a baseline example that is modified in later steps.
– Rename the descriptor file (also referred to as a header file) of the newly-created disk to match the name of the original virtual disk.
– Modify the contents of the renamed descriptor file to reference the flat file.
– Remove the leftover temporary flat file of the newly-created disk, as it is not required.
This procedure will not work on virtual disks configured with a Para-virtualized SCSI controller in the virtual machine

Oof. Good thing I found a backup of the file. This whole command line process is too complicated for a Windows peasant like me.
This video saved our company.
thumbs up
after all these years there is no inbuilt repair tool that is automated for the simple lock and vmdk descriptor issue…. that's really disappointing. seeks the open source community is going to catch up then this product will be worthless.
your a life saver
You saved my day. Thanks!
Hey, you really saved me 😀 great guide!
Apres la regeneration du fichier vmdk la partition est devenue raw est ce que quelqu'un à une idée??
Thank you, This is very good video.
Thanks, this works from a to z, it's a superb manual for solving this problem !
What a life saver team @netcomp are very happy
Thank you! Really helpful for me!
It's work for me..
thank you, you save so many people man !!!
How is the procedure if my virtual disk have snapshots and the lost file is a descriptor file of a delta files? Excelent video!!! Thank you very much!!!
A very good video! Thanks for putting it together, it saved us from loads of hardwork!
how to find the ESXI commandline???
Really nice video! But what if you don't find the flat file neither? Very strange. Even the directory where my VM points to is not there in the /vmfs/volumes. I can find 2 other vmdk files and their corresponding flat files. But I can't tell my VM to use 1 of these. I can't even edit settings of my VM anymore, it always gives me an unexpected error happened. So my flat file is not really orphaned. What should i do? It's a ESXi6.5 without vcenter (i only have 1 vm)
I accidentally deleted `Ubuntu-disk1.vmdk` from `C:Usersanum.sherazDocumentsVirtual MachinesUbuntu ` . Now I don't have any file with `.vmdk` extension in my VM directory. I see you have TestVM-000001-flat.vmdk. What do I do ?
You save my life man thanks a lot
Thank you for this great job! This was really helpful.
Thank you.
Почему вообще это происходит? Перезагрузил хост и виртуальная машина не запускается – причем с железом все ок! И "отличное" решение подключаться по ssh и править ручками 🙁 И это коммерческий софт :))
i don't have words to say thanks for this video. Really saved my almost 2 years of Hard work.
This is a very well produced video. Not only did it help my solve my problem, but the additional pop-up windows within the video with helpful information (such as the vi commands) helped save me time from having to perform secondary (and tertiary) research, which usually distracts from the original issue at hand. Thank you so very much!
Thank you very much, this works perfect.
wow. saved my bacon. !
perfect, thanks.
Thank god she has such a soothing voice.
Life Saver today
Please, help out here. Though the VM started up fine; unlike before that it keep asking for the missing vmdx file but this time around, its asking for OS. This vm vmdx file that turned virtual machine file type to flat file was working before. I wouldn't know what made it go flat. I really, really want to old vm as there are some legacy software with licence running on it.
Saved the day! Thank you
very useful, it works
thanks so much! works like charm 🙂
Worked splendidly, thanks much for putting it to video.
Worked awesome for me ,thanks for this guide
saved our career ..
Worked awesome for me. I was stressing! Steps I needed to do in addition were… F2 Physically on the local server and allow ssh. I waited a day after the vmkfstools -e "example".vmdk failed. It worked the next day and the server booted up.
work for me!
worked
Very helpful. It resolved the issue.
Life saver. Thanks
