Late to the party watching this… Love this game. Haven't played in years, need to break it out again. Thanks for streaming and posting this. One thing though. Edward mentioned several times about attempting to score 14 points off the two statues in the bottom-right corner of the board. Just an FYI – You cannot use the same building twice for the objective card scoring, so it would be impossible to score 14 points there. Sadly, it's easy to miss in the rulebook, because it's listed on a separate sheet that comes with the game. It states "Each building may be used only to attain an objective once! Thus, a building between two statues is only counted once." This rule with an example is stated for Bridges, Statues, Lakes and Chains. Regarding the Statues, they're worth 7 points because they aren't as flexible as the other goals. Each Statue only has three districts surrounding it and you must get all three to score it. The two statues in the bottom right is a way to add a little more flexibility for making that goal down there, but you can only score one of them, not both because they share two districts.
This should be the next game in Capstone Games line "simply complex", it's such a good game!
Super fun, thank you! And another game for the christmas wishlist 😉
Backstory on this game was that Sébastien Pauchon was looking at a picture of the Goa board before the rules were seen, and made a guess on what he thought the rules might be. He was very far off on how Goa bidding rules played but thought it would make a good game anyways, so he worked on it and voila! And it was rethemed, once named after the US state, Oklahoma…and yeah, why is Matt starting with 5 medium sticks… 😛
Opinionated Games Blog has record of the Goa mishap, "The bidding mechanism in Metropolys, as described in the rules, comes from a misinterpretation of a picture in the Goa rules, while I was flipping through the leaflet for the first time… "
Oklahoma mentioned during his interview. Very nice read if you have time, especially if you are a designer: http://meepletown.com/2011/02/game-designer-interview-sebastien-pauchon/
The board is okay.
Why did matt have an extra piece for the game @ 38:40 & 43:50 he places two different #7s, also at the end of the game you can see he has 14 towers on the board instead of 13
Get well soon Edward! The coughs aren't bad at all on mic, but they can't be fun for your throat.
If my choices were, "Anachrony," "Something Bone," and "A Third One," I'd choose Anachrony too!
And that's why Heavy Cardboard exists, to highlight games you have never heard of, now want, and just cannot buy in retail anymore 😉
Anyway, I "bet" on Amanda last night, and Edward tonight… moral of the story, maybe I shouldn't root for anyone, it's for your own good. Thanks for another great look at a game (hope Capstone reprints, looks simply complex to me…).
the board looks like Rialto
